Essay on English as an Official Language in the United States

Should English Become the Official Language in the United States? It may be a surprise for many people, but among the fifty or so countries using English as their official language the USA is not listed. The USA does not have the official language at all. After the War for Independence there was an initiative to make English the official language of the new nation, but it was brought down as undemocratic and threatening for the individual freedom. The American government back then was very particular about following the Constitution to the letter and refused everything that seemed to limit personal freedom. The USA was the nation that accepted immigrants from any other nation and any other part of the world without caring about nationality, language and religion of the newcomer. The right to speak the language of one’s choice, if one so wishes, was treated in the same way as the right to believe in whatever God one believes. However, every one or two years the initiative of making English the federally accepted official language is renewed, getting more prominent at the times of economic crises: the English-speaking citizens feel threatened by the growing rates of immigration and try to make it more difficult for the foreigners to become citizens in their turn, saving working places for the Americans. Some consider the official status of English as nation-uniting initiative; the others consider it to be anti-immigrant policy – yet, it is hard to make a downright decision on what it is. The only thing that can be said there is that nothing throughout the history of humankind reflected the ideals of freedom all the reasonable people aspire to better than the original American Constitution. Every amendment makes its modern counterpart further from that ideal; and if the Founding Fathers consider official language to be undemocratic, then it probably is.

Organizational Behavior ( Ob ) - 1426 Words

Organizational behavior (OB) is the study of how people interact within groups and can be used to achieve a covenant relationship within organizations similar to the relationship that God has with His people. Personalities have a significant role in OB and personality tests create value by allowing organizations to determine ahead of time where potential conflict may arise between employees. The Jung Typology Test classifies people into one of the sixteen personality types determined by Isabel Briggs Myers and one of the four temperaments defined by David Keirsey. This discussion examines the effect of my ISTJ personality type and SJ temperament on myself and those around me on a personal and professional level. The analysis covers the strengths, weaknesses, and sources of conflict associated with each individual aspect of the ISTJ personality—introverted, sensing, thinking, and judging—as well as assessing the personality type as a whole. Lastly, the discussion conclud es with lessons I have learned regarding the use of OB in workplace improvement efforts, as well as specific areas where I can use OB to enhance my performance as an employee, co-worker, and manager. Symbolism In The Great Gatsby Essay The Great GatsbyThe Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, contains many literary devices. One of such devices is characterization, the authors method of describing characters. In this novel, the author creates many of the characters to be superficial. Through their actions, comments, and descriptions, Fitzgerald gives the reader an idea of the characters. One such character proves to be Daisy. Although she had fallen in love with Gatsby when she first met him, when he was at war she quickly wanted something to shape her life. Because of the wealth and lifestyle involved, she chose Tom Buchanan as her husband. Later, we see that Daisy still loves Gatsby, and cheats on Tom because of this. This act shows that she is disloyal and shallow. Daisy believes that she can go on with life however she wants and not have to worry about those she affects. She was the driver of the car and killed Myrtle, yet she let Gatsby die because of his love for her. Daisy abused Gatsbys emotions, and then left the area with Tom to get away from the destruction they caused. These are ways in which Daisy proved to be a superficial character. Another character who displays such qualities is Daisys husband, Tom. Tom is even more dishonest than Daisy, a notion that begins taking shape with the discovery of Toms girl in the city. Tom proves to be a man of little morals. Although he confronts Daisy about morals in her relationship with Gatsby, Tom has his own woman on the side. Also, he lets this fact be known by others as though it does not bother him, an exposing of his nature. Later, after Myrtle is killed in the accident, Tom shows sadness, but not remorse. Tom then instructs George to murder Gatsby, an act that comes more from a heart seeking revenge for Daisy than for Myrtle. In the wake of both of these events, Tom gets together his family and goes away to avoid the mess he made. These actions make the superficial nature of Tom obvious.
