Multicultural Education Essay -- Education Educating Culture Essays
Multicultural Education Getting Rid of the Stereotypes, and Teaching in a Multicultural Perspective Overview: It is rare that any two-classroom teachers will have the same definition for multicultural education. â€Å"The basic goal of multicultural education is to help all children understand and appreciate events and people from various points of view†(Welton, 113). Teaching with a multicultural perspective encourages appreciation and understanding of other cultures as well as one’s own. Rey Gomez states that teaching with this perspective promotes the child’s sense of the uniqueness of his own culture as a positive characteristic and enables the child to accept the uniqueness of the cultures of others. Children’s attitudes toward their race and ethnic group and other cultural groups begin to form early in the preschool years. Children are easily influenced by the cultural, opinions, and attitudes of their caregivers. Caregiver’s perceptions of ethnic and racial groups can affect the child’s attitudes toward those minority groups. â€Å"Early childhood educators can influence the development of positive attitudes in young children by learning about and promoting the various cultures represented among the children they teach†(Gomez, 1). Gomez also states young children can develop stereotypic viewpoints of cultures different from their own when similarities among all individuals are not emphasized. Teachers can help eliminate stereotypes by presenting material and activities that enable children to learn the similarities of all individuals. Early childhood teachers and parents of young children should become aware of the myths and assumptions associated with multicultural education so that they develop appropriate goals and methods. Listed below are the assumptions of multicultural education created by Paul Gorski and Bob Covert: 1. It is increasingly important for political, social, educational and economic reasons to recognize the US is a culturally diverse society. 2. Multicultural education is for all students. 3. Multicultural education is synonymous with effective teaching. 4. Teaching is a cross-cultural encounter. 5. The educational system has not served all students equally well. 6. Multicultural education is (should) being synonymous with educational innovation and reform. 7. 4 Actual Concepts In American Society Essay
Explain at least 4 actual concepts that you see in our American Society today that were mentioned in 1984.            Orwell’s groundbreaking dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, may or may not have been composed as a futuristic novel, portending political and sociological phenomena. Whether or not Orwell intended his novel to predict future trends or simply illuminate existing realities, a number of the political concepts portrayed in the novel have real-life connotations even in a democratic society.            In Nineteen Eighty-Four, telescreens exist in every household and also in public areas. Additionally, hidden microphones and cameras are spread out through the public and private domains to catch any potential enemies of the state. In contemporary America, video cameras have been installed in public areas: notably in inner-cities and also in the suburbs.  An article by Lynn Marotta examines the ver-increasing number of public surveillance and the seemingly public ambivalence about such tactics: What started as a simple way to monitor security around the perimeter of public places has evolved to a point where anyone can install a hidden video camera and monitor that video from anywhere in the world directly over the Internet. In addition, the integration of traffic cameras, and face recognition software give law enforcement the ability to track and identify virtually anyone without us even knowing it. See more: Beowulf essay essay                                                                        (Marotta).            Orwell also posits the concept of â€Å"doublethink†in Nineteen Eighty-Four. â€Å"Doublethink†is the ability to hold contradictory beliefs simultaneously, to forget facts which contradict this ability. â€Å"Doublethink†is one of many examples in Nineteen Eighty-Four which demonstrate the power language has over thought and belief systems. American culture is rife with examples of â€Å"doublethink;†perhaps the most notable contemporary example is the widespread and contradictory beliefs in America’s military power, with the nation’s population able to â€Å"believe†simultaneously that America is the world’s greatest iltarty power, worthy of invading and occupying foreign countries and policing the world, and ye we are told again and again how vulnerable we are and how dangerous are our enemies: North korea, Iran, and radical Islam to name a few.            Another Orwellian concept: â€Å"the Two Minute Hate†showed the enemies of the Party on a huge video screen with all manner of perversion and aggression, set to inspire terror among the population of Oceania. The American counterpart to the â€Å"two Minute Hate†can witnessed on any channel’s nightly news when individuals such as the Iranian President or the â€Å"insurgent leader†Al Sadr are shown as menacing threats to the American way of life and also as the progenitors of the Iraqi war, when it was actually the U.S. who invaded and has brought terror and ruin to the Iraqi state and population. Nineteen Eighty-Four posits language as a key aspect of thought manipulation. Nowhere is this idea more explicit than in Orwell’s concept of â€Å"newspeak.†This is language reduced to remove any sense of liberation or specificity in speech or thought. An example of newspeak at work in contemporary America is the sue of the term â€Å"collateral; damage†to describe the killing of thousands of civilians during the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. 2) Oedipus was doomed from birth. Trace backe this fate of Oedipus to the origin of the tragedy and arrive at the ulimate end to the family tragedy in Antigone. The fact the Oedipus was born illegitimately – that he was a bastard – forms the central theme for the ultimate tragedy in Oedipus Rex. When Oedipus begins his quest to the Oracle of English Delphi to confirm his parentage, the Oracle relates a same prophecy: that Oedipus will kill his father and marry his mother. Later, when Oedipus kills an unarmed man who demands that Oedipus give way of the road, this man is in fact King Laius, Oedipus’ father.            After Oedipus dispatches the Sphinx he is given the throne of Thebes and weds Jocasta, a widow who is in fact his mother. Shortly afterward, Thebes falls into a state of pollution and degeneracy. A soothsayer tells oedipus that he is the cause of the city’s misfortunes. When oedipus finally realizes that origins of his birth: that he is the son of Laius and Jocasta, his world comes tumbling down. Jocasta, his mother and wife hangs herself in the closet, in the chamber where they had been sexually intimate. In response, Oedipus blinds himself by forcing her brooch pins into his eyes. The origin of the tragedy is in Oedipus seeking the truth of his birth; the origin of tragedy is in his illegitimacy. ((3) Macbeth was only as evil as his motivating forces. Explain fully the fate and the two most important motivating forces of Macbeth and his downfall            The most important motivating factors for Macbeth’s downfall emerge from his will to power and his attempt to twist fate into a direction he chooses. Specifically, the will to power is embodied by his wife, lady Macbeth, and fate is embodied by the three witches who prophesied both his rise and fall to and from the throne.            With his wife’s intrigue and cajoling, as well as the prophecy of the three witches, Macbeth believes himself fated to occupy the throne of Scotland. However, in order to embrace what he believes is his good-fate, Macbeth must commit murder.            When Lady Macbeth approaches Macbeth with her intent to kill King Duncan, Macbeth displays some trepidation about doing so; however his wife’s persuasiveness enables him to go through with what he realizes is an immoral act. After the murder, when Macbeth’s conscience plagues him, Lady Macbeth enjoins him to act normally and lay his conscience aside as she has done. Macbeth’s ultimate downfall rises from his own conscience and his ambivalent embracing of his newly stolen powers as King.                        As Macbeth’s sanity splinters, Lady Macbeth also begins to be haunted by her own conscience.. She hallucinates spots of blood on her hands and washes them, saying, â€Å"out, out damn spot.†Macbeth’s downfall is spurred by the deterioration of his wife’s sanity as it was Lady Macbeth’s hitherto resolve which empowered Macbeth to act so rashly in the first place. Macbeth’s fall is due directly to his pursuit of ambition and power, which are given birth by the witches’ prophecy and his wife’s explicit ambitions.            Only at the end does Macbeth realize his true mistake as he â€Å"struts and frets his hour upon the stage.†Here, he acknowledges that he has been at best an actor of fate’s script, and at worse, a mere puppet to his wife’s ambitions or a kind of â€Å"prop†for fate itself to play out a never-ending lesson of morality.            Macbeth’s true life has bene put aside to enact this ‘role†which occasioned murder and insanity an the downfall of Kings. His ambitions and the commission of murder have caught up with and surpassed his original vision of fate; now, as the play reaches its tragic conclusion, the true purpose of his ambitions and crimes are shown, not as a will to power, but as a will toward learning the lessons of ambition and crime. Tractor Poem Analysis - 782 Words
The poem â€Å"Tractor†is written by Ted Hughes is literally about a tractor. The season is winter and the man is trying to start the tractor but is unable to do so because of the weather. Eventually, the man is able to start the tractor. However, while reading it further, this poem seems to be telling us that with determination, man can overcome many problems no matter how tough the problem is, using nature as a form of trouble to humans. Moreover, it also tells us that the journey to solving the problem is difficult. This poem is in nine stanzas, where the first four stanzas describe the process of starting up the tractor while the last five stanzas, describe how the tractor finally starts up and rejoices. The poet personifies the tractor†¦show more content†¦Hence, we can see that the poet has created negative impressions of anger and disappointment through the use of the first person narrative point of view, while the persona is still determined to start it up. Next, I would be talking about the use of imagery to create impressions of success. Firstly, the poet uses the simile â€Å"like a demon†that demonstrates a â€Å"more-than-usually-complete materialization†. This simile compares the characteristic of ‘materialization’ to the starting of the tractor, where the phrase â€Å"more-than-usually-complete†emphasizes that the effort taken to start the tractor was immense and tremendously difficult such that the ignition of the tractor’s engine is â€Å"more-than-usually-complete†, displaying the impressions of success. Furthermore, the poet uses the personification ‘levers awake imprisoned deadweight’, where the word ‘awake’ is used to cause someone to get up from sleep. This word tells us that the tractor is â€Å"awaken†after a deep sleep, and that shows us that the persona is successful in â€Å"awaking†the tractor. Additionally, the word †Å"imprisoned†suggests that that the tractor was locked away, but is now freed from imprisonment, suggesting triumph and victory in starting the tractor. Essay on English as an Official Language in the United States
Should English Become the Official Language in the United States? It may be a surprise for many people, but among the fifty or so countries using English as their official language the USA is not listed. The USA does not have the official language at all. After the War for Independence there was an initiative to make English the official language of the new nation, but it was brought down as undemocratic and threatening for the individual freedom. The American government back then was very particular about following the Constitution to the letter and refused everything that seemed to limit personal freedom. The USA was the nation that accepted immigrants from any other nation and any other part of the world without caring about nationality, language and religion of the newcomer. The right to speak the language of one’s choice, if one so wishes, was treated in the same way as the right to believe in whatever God one believes. However, every one or two years the initiative of making English the federally accepted official language is renewed, getting more prominent at the times of economic crises: the English-speaking citizens feel threatened by the growing rates of immigration and try to make it more difficult for the foreigners to become citizens in their turn, saving working places for the Americans. Some consider the official status of English as nation-uniting initiative; the others consider it to be anti-immigrant policy – yet, it is hard to make a downright decision on what it is. The only thing that can be said there is that nothing throughout the history of humankind reflected the ideals of freedom all the reasonable people aspire to better than the original American Constitution. Every amendment makes its modern counterpart further from that ideal; and if the Founding Fathers consider official language to be undemocratic, then it probably is.

Organizational Behavior ( Ob ) - 1426 Words
Organizational behavior (OB) is the study of how people interact within groups and can be used to achieve a covenant relationship within organizations similar to the relationship that God has with His people. Personalities have a significant role in OB and personality tests create value by allowing organizations to determine ahead of time where potential conflict may arise between employees. The Jung Typology Test classifies people into one of the sixteen personality types determined by Isabel Briggs Myers and one of the four temperaments defined by David Keirsey. This discussion examines the effect of my ISTJ personality type and SJ temperament on myself and those around me on a personal and professional level. The analysis covers the strengths, weaknesses, and sources of conflict associated with each individual aspect of the ISTJ personalityâ€â€introverted, sensing, thinking, and judgingâ€â€as well as assessing the personality type as a whole. Symbolism In The Great Gatsby Essay The Great GatsbyThe Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, contains many literary devices. One of such devices is characterization, the authors method of describing characters. In this novel, the author creates many of the characters to be superficial. Through their actions, comments, and descriptions, Fitzgerald gives the reader an idea of the characters. One such character proves to be Daisy. Although she had fallen in love with Gatsby when she first met him, when he was at war she quickly wanted something to shape her life. Because of the wealth and lifestyle involved, she chose Tom Buchanan as her husband. Later, we see that Daisy still loves Gatsby, and cheats on Tom because of this. This act shows that she is disloyal and shallow. Daisy believes that she can go on with life however she wants and not have to worry about those she affects. She was the driver of the car and killed Myrtle, yet she let Gatsby die because of his love for her. Daisy abused Gatsbys emotions, and then left the area with Tom to get away from the destruction they caused. These are ways in which Daisy proved to be a superficial character. Another character who displays such qualities is Daisys husband, Tom. Tom is even more dishonest than Daisy, a notion that begins taking shape with the discovery of Toms girl in the city. Tom proves to be a man of little morals. Although he confronts Daisy about morals in her relationship with Gatsby, Tom has his own woman on the side. Also, he lets this fact be known by others as though it does not bother him, an exposing of his nature. Later, after Myrtle is killed in the accident, Tom shows sadness, but not remorse. Tom then instructs George to murder Gatsby, an act that comes more from a heart seeking revenge for Daisy than for Myrtle. In the wake of both of these events, Tom gets together his family and goes away to avoid the mess he made. These actions make the superficial nature of Tom obvious. Throughout The Great Gatsby the reader uncovers many different types of characters, many similar. One of the most common traits is that of being and acting superficial.
