Its also important to remember the difference between a routine endoscopy and an appendectomy, as there are some procedures best limited to hospital settings.âIf you are given a choice between general anesthesia and a less invasive form of sedation, its typically wise to opt for the latter for a few reasons. From a healthcare vantage point, milder forms of sedation are typically just as effective and come with much fewer risks. They also tend to be less costly, and require less downtime spent in the hospital. Less downtime means a faster discharge, which means a lower total bill. You can try and negotiate a milder form of sedation for less invasive procedures and act as your own advocate throughout the process.âLimit your stay if you can.In an ideal world, you would feel comfortable taking as long as you need to recover to full health before being discharged. Sadly, the current reality is that the lo nger you stay in the hospital, the larger your bill will be.âTo save on costly hospital stays that can leave you in debt, being your own advocate is key,â explained Friedmann. âAs soon as you enter an emergency room, try to calmly and collectively ensure your symptoms are addressed. Castlight Health also offers a subscription based service to compare prices around the country. Know, too, what insurance companies have contracts with the hospitals as each insurance contract nets a discount that can range between 20 to 8 0 percent.âGet to negotiations.Medical bills are often reduced or settled for less. Why not yours?âArmed with the full bill plus the average cost, you can intelligently speak with the billing manager to negotiate a better price,â explained Garber. âOftentimes, you will receive 10 to 50 percent of the original bill. You can negotiate for a better discount by paying cash for the remaining balance; lesser discounts will likely have you working out a monthly payment plan.âBe sure that you have all the details in line so youâll be negotiating from the strongest position possible.âNot many people think of trying to negotiate medical debt, but it is certainly possible,â Tayne told us. âFirst, make sure youâre the responsible party before discussing any payments. When looking to negotiate your debt, be prepared. Medical debt is inherently tied to hardship, so focus on the medical issue that landed you in debt in the first place. If you have a hardship, be prepared to dis cuss that and also go through your budget before calling so you know what you can and cannot do before having a conversation and feeling pressure to answer and agree to terms that may not make sense.âAsk for assistance.Sometimes you just have to ask for help. That might mean getting someone to guide you through the process.âA medical advocate can help work through and explain the medical billing process,â offered Tayne. âThis may be a good option if youâre unsure or overwhelmed by the process. However, be aware that most medical bill advocates will charge a fee.âIf you can prove youâre experiencing financial difficulties, there may be programs you can take advantage of.âThere may be a hardship packet with the hospital that you can fill out, and you can request one if you havenât seen it,â Tayne advised. âMost hospitals have a financial services department where you can complete a hardship packet, and the department should get back in contact with you relatively soon after you submit your paperwork. The hospital will let you know what costs will be reduced from your bill due to your hardships. You also may be able to negotiate for a payment plan. Many medical bills are interest-free so consider a payment plan in your budget as an offer to resolve the matter.âHardship programs like these benefit the hospitals as well.âSome healthcare systems have a community or charity care center,â explained Garber. âProviding you meet their qualification of needing financial assistance, between 25 to 100 percent of your healthcare may be written off as charity. Ask for their definition and be guided to their portal to fill out the forms. You will likely be asked to show your bank balance as well as tax forms.âBankruptcy?It should be one of the last options you consider, but bankruptcy exists for a reason, and thereâs no shame in taking advantage of it if you have to.âIf all else fails and you are unable to pay for your procedure, file bankru ptcy,â Garber offered. âHealthcare is the number one reason why Americans file bankruptcy for personal reasons and itâs an embarrassment as no other country on the planet makes its citizens give up everything they own in order to take care of themselves medically.âThe best option is not having a medical issue at all. Excuse Me
It comes in many forms. It seems to seek you out when you have the least of patience, rudeness is all around you. You see it a lot around this time of year, when colorful lights are being strung on to houses, non- inanimate and sometimes living objects. It happens when the man dressed up in red and green ringing the bell outside the store for donations and is returned with a gum wrapper dropped in his bucket. You can find it in the Christmas sales on black Friday when two old women are beating each other with clothes hangers trying to get the last scarf. Sometimes itââ¬â¢s easy to see someone and say ââ¬Å"That guyââ¬â¢s a jerk!â⬠and sometimes youââ¬â¢re lying in bed that night thinking you just got played out of your mind. Itââ¬â¢s not always easy to see the intensions that lie in people. Thatââ¬â¢s why you should be aware of the different types of rude people and how to deal with them. Cantââ¬â¢-See-Past-My-Nose Rude: Thereââ¬â¢s always that one person (at least) in class or at work that has the Canââ¬â¢t-See-Past-My-Nose personality. That person will walk up to a group of people-usually in a dramatic or noticeable entrance- and interrupts whoever is speaking with ââ¬Å"You will never guess what I did this weekend!â⬠Then continue to brag about everything that happened. Slowly people start to drift away until thereââ¬â¢s only one person who is cornered and nodding meekly. This rude is difficult to adjust to because no matter what is said to her, she will make it so she is the center of the story again. She canââ¬â¢t seem to see others point of view and feels entitled to anything suggested. HOW TO DEAL: When you are the one that is cornered nodding meekly, donââ¬â¢t panic. There is an escape. First off let them talk! Once everything is out of their system then move on step 2, pause, give a short note of understanding but do not give them feedback. NEVER PUT ANYTHING OUT THERE. Step 3 is simply saying a short dire ct dismissal and walking away. Iââ¬â¢m-Older-Than-You-Rude No matter how old you areâ⬠¦ there is always someone older than you. Everyone has had that glorifying moment where your parent is yelled at by their parent. Reality setââ¬â¢s in that no one is perfect but thereââ¬â¢s always that one person that demands respect for the sole purpose that they are older than you. These type of people are generally the ones that have no lives/career choice with higher authority/ or just live on putting other people down. Now you should always pay respect to your elders, but you donââ¬â¢t exactly have to make your children wear khakis, sweater vest and attend private schools because your Mother-In- Law doesnââ¬â¢t think you are capable of raising proper children. HOW TO DEAL: With stern but respectful toneâ⬠¦ Prove them wrong! Avoid making personal opinions but back up what you say with facts. Also sometimes talking just wonââ¬â¢t cut it. Show them through your ACTIONS . Sloppy-rude This is probably the most common rude people that inhabit the world. This is because for some reason, after you have known a person for so long suddenly boundaries and personally space doesnââ¬â¢t exist anymore. You best friend will come over to your house; unlock your door with your carefully hidden key. Walk in, throw their coat on the stair railing, pick out a snack and watch your TV until you come home from work. Then when you are with them, manners arenââ¬â¢t needed anymore. In the middle of a conversation they will burp, fart, or eat the food off of your plate with dirty fingers while you are eating it. HOW TO DEAL: Resist the urge to invest in guard dog, do invest in alarm systems and pocket sized disinfectant or Febreze. Also if they are your friend is may be suitable to be brutally honest and speak out saying ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s disgusting!â⬠if in a situation per say is a blind date or someone you donââ¬â¢t know very well temper down the ins ults with statements like ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s really inappropriate.â⬠And if that is still too much, direct attention towards yourself by saying ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t appreciate when you (fill in the blank).â⬠Now-That-Iââ¬â¢m-Here-Youââ¬â¢re-Stuck-With-Me Rude In general these are the people that make the one night stay and one week stay, or month! Perhaps a relative, friend that isnââ¬â¢t quite stable and on their feet yet, or someone you just met. He will agree to sleep on your couch but slowly you notice washing more and more of his clothes. You will find yourself giving him an allowance and if not he will guilt trip you reminded you of everything he did for you in your time of need. Guilt trips are his specialty. But when you start receiving his mail itââ¬â¢s time to bring out the boot. HOW TO DEAL: Call him out! Simply just saying ââ¬Å"I feel like you are trying to guilt trip me.â⬠will have him back peddling. Or if you want him out of your h ouse, find an appropriate time and place and politely give him a date to move out. Hold back from announcing it at the dinner table. I-Donââ¬â¢t-Have-Kids-So-Iââ¬â¢m-Going-To-Pretend-You-Donââ¬â¢t-Either Rude Remember your old college buddy that used to bring you to all the biggest party? Weââ¬â¢ll sheââ¬â¢s in town and wants to have a girls night out! Well that would be perfectly fine except you work a 70 hour week, have 2 children and a stay at home husband. I-Donââ¬â¢t-Have-Kids-So-Iââ¬â¢m-Going-To-Pretend-You- Donââ¬â¢t-Either people are dangerous, and recommended to avoid completely. But since this article is how to handle situations and not how to run away, take these precautions when around these people. HOW TO DEAL: Plan out ââ¬Å"timedâ⬠Dates and have an event to go to afterwards. That way if they insist you stay for a couple more drinks, excuse yourself by saying you have a meeting to go too. Do not invite these people to your house. And al ways drive in separate cars when going out with them. Chris from Riverside Military Academy once said ââ¬Å"Do not argue with an idiot, he will drag you to his level and beat you with experience.â⬠Itââ¬â¢s easy to take the low road and snap at a rude person for their behavior but is that really solving anything? The world is full of rude people, skilled in making people go crazy and yelling at him so bystanders will look at him like they are the unreasonable ones. With these tips hopefully you can keep your head and learn to live with the most difficult people.

At the time when Orwell started writing Nineteen Eighty-Four, WWII was just coming to an end. The late 40ââ¬â¢s was also the start of the Cold War. The Cold war brought along much fear of communist governments, such as the Soviet Union, becoming a world power. Orwell was one of the people who feared a dictatorship coming to power. He wanted to warn the population of what could happen if a totalitarian government became a world power. In order to do such a thing, Orwell decided to write a book. The book he wrote was Nineteen Eighty-Four, it is based on what Orwell felt the world would become if the world were ruled by a totalitarian government. The writing of Nineteen Eighty-Four was influenced by dictatorships in the 1940ââ¬â¢s. In the book Nineteen Eighty-Four, most people are monitored at all times by the government. The people of Oceania also have no choice in who will become their leader. This is called a totalitarian government. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald - 1548 Words
F. Scott Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s novel, ââ¬Å"The Great Gatsbyâ⬠, is one of the few novels he wrote in 1925. The novel takes place during the 1920ââ¬â¢s following the 1st World War. It is written about a young man named Nick, from the east he moved to the west to learn about the bond business. He ends up moving next to a mysterious man named Gatsby who ends up giving him the lesion of his life. After love circles with Gatsby and his cousin Daisy, lastly Jordan and gossip resulting with killings end up discussed over his experience resulting going back east. Through reading the book, it shows how the experience of selfness and World War 1 made the high social optimistic over their lives. Gatsby would be a great example of not valuing his materials. He had everything he wanted ââ¬â except Daisy of course ââ¬â but he never used or appreciated the materials he was surrounded by. ââ¬Å"You know, old sport, Iââ¬â¢ve never used that pool all summer,â⬠said Gatsby. He didnââ¬â¢t value anything but Daisy since the reason for everything he did was for her. It only leaves to question to whether he really loved her or wanted her wealth or maybe just even the accomplishment of having her. For all we can know Daisy could just be trophy toward Gatsby and her husband Tom since they never considered her opinion as if she was an object. On the other hand, we had Nick chasing his American dream of learning the bond business. Through the process he fell for Jordan and was the observer of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s life, which just caused him to go back home. In the end, everyone just wants the American Dream but everybodyââ¬â¢s definition is different which just indicates that Iââ¬â¢ll never be accomplished. Once we accomplish something, we end up being hungry for another goal. Passage Through out the whole story, all we read from various characters are rumors about Gatsby. Even after his death only a few knew who he really was.

Two of the greatest know civil rights speakers in the United States was Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm x. Both of these men had two very different views on what they thought would be the best way for blacks to get equality. Martin Luther King Jr. believed in his main philosophy which was non violent resistance. Martin used the teachings from Ghandi to teach African Americans how to use non violent resistance as a way to earn equality. He also believed that blacks should try to find common ground between them and the white community and that this is not war it is just injustice vs. justice. Introduction This paper will cover several topics related to high-performing teams and work groups. It will discuss how these two kinds of workplace people sets and how they differ in their pursuit of organizational strategy and compare these differences to virtual teams. It will identify the characteristics of successful leaders of high-performing teams and finally discuss why high-performing teams are important to organizations. A team can be defined as a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, set of performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable. ââ¬Å"That definition lays down the discipline that teams must share to be effective (Katzenbach, 2005). Organizations utilize teams to perform operational and project based tasks. People working in teams have the capacity to solve complex problems that cannot be solved by individuals working alone. People working in teams bring more resources to a task, including a variety of perspectives, knowledge, skills, and experience (Capella University, 2008). This diversity of perspectives, knowledge, skills, and experience allows a team to outperform the sum of its parts and is a critical component of a team being labeled as a high-performing team. Teams come in many forms, they can be permanent or temporary, they can be leader-led or self-managed, and they can be co-located or virtual. Regardless of their purpose and form, all teams are made up of individuals interacting interdependently to achieve common organizational goal. Furthermore, all teams share the following: clear boundaries, common tasks, differentiated member roles, autonomy, dependence on others, and collective responsibility (Capella University, 2008). Teams definitely are forms of work groups, but not all work groups are teams (Brounstein, 2011). A work group is also a collection of individuals however; they may not have complementary skills, a common purpose or a set of shared goals. In a work group, each member is responsible for only their own individual contributions. He or she achieves outcomes or makes their contribution to the organization in (relative) isolation. Individuals need not have any concern about what other members of the group achieve. Within a work group, there is not the interconnectedness and shared responsibility you see between team members. Each member of a group can say ââ¬ËI did my best; it is not my fault that others did not pull their weight (www. leadership-development-coaching. com, 2011). ââ¬â¢ To add more context to the difference between work groups and teams refer to Table 1 (Brounstein, 2011). Members of high-performing teams tend to develop a collective purpose that goes beyond that which the organization has established for them (Capella University, 2008). According to Harvard researcher Richard Hickman, high-performing teams must meet three effectiveness criteria (Capella University, 2008): * The team must consistently produce high-quality output. * The team must promote the personal growth needs and well-being of team members. The team must grow and learn as a unit. The Pursuit of Organizational Strategy It is not too much of a stretch to see which scenario is preferable when it comes to pursuing alignment with your organizationââ¬â¢s strategy. Those in a workgroup, although maybe tied in roles and responsibilities to the organizationââ¬â¢s strategic imperatives, is not concerned about others in his group or departm ent, and therefore has no vested interest in another succeeding. High performing teams, on the other hand, consider their team as equally or more important than themselves. A recent study of Fortune 1000 companies conducted by the Center for Effective Organizations at the University of Southern California concluded that 68 percent of the organizations in the study use self ââ¬âmanaged or high-performing teamsâ⬠¦but the study also shows only 10 percent of workers were in such teams (Capella University, 2008). Therefore, as much as we can agree there is a benefit from moving those in work groups into high-performing team environments, these environments are difficult to create, lead and maintain. A failed attempt to create a high-performing team could be more detrimental than keeping a group of individuals in the work group mode, and thus making each individual accountable for driving alignment with the organizationââ¬â¢s strategy. Virtual teams can play an interesting twist on this strategic alignment anomaly. This author suggests that virtual teams are no different in driving alignment with organizational strategy than co-located teams, with one exception. In the role of operational support, where, for example a help-desk or call-center can take advantage of the ââ¬Å"follow-the-sunâ⬠support methodology, you can find significant benefit by tying a virtual teamââ¬â¢s performance as a team to an SLA, where individuals are working together to answer phones within a certain amount of rings, meet a certain first call resolution statistic etc. This type of virtual team, if lead properly can be a very high-performing team, as their bonuses and overall performance can be tied to these SLA results of the team. Successful Leadership Characteristics of High-Performing Teams Leadership of high-performing teams have been mentioned twice in this paper; once to summarize how difficult it is to maintain high-performing teams, the second to note how to lead a high-performing virtual team. Managing any team is not an easy task. Managing and maintaining high-performing teams is increasingly difficult. Creating and managing high-performing teams is as much an art as it is a science. There is no magic formula that will uarantee team success, nor is there one best way to lead a team (Capella University, 2008). We can define four team leadership skills that will help drive work groups and teams into high-performing teams: 1. Invest in ongoing personal development 2. Provide team direction, structure and resources 3. Help the team manage boundaries 4. Manage the type and timing of interventions The Importance of High-Performing Teams We have shown the significant benefit of creating and maintaining high- performing teams concerning an organizationââ¬â¢s strategy and team accomplishment. High-performing teams tend to require less management since the team assumes a purpose as a whole and not individuals. These teams tend to be self-managed, or slightly managed by a leader, more so in a facilitation role than what we know as a daily manager. The most important task of the team leader is to create a work context that inspires and enables the team to do its work rather than directly intervening in the teamââ¬â¢s day-to-day work (Capella University, 2008).
